Elfin Thyme (Thymus praecox ‘Elfin’) is a diminutive ground cover that ranges from 1/4″-1/2″ tall with blooms maybe reaching 3/4″-1″. It is the shortest of the thymes I know although Wooly thyme (Thymus praecox ‘Languinosus’) is a close second. Elfin Thyme has mid lavender-pink flowers and slightly hairy bright gray-green small leaves. This is an excellent groundcover for full to part sun and especially suited to use between pavers, bricks or flagstone. Very easy to grow and needs minimal water but will grow faster and fill in with weekly water. This plant is well behaved and easy to keep in bounds. Tolerates most soil types including heavy clay. It can be used as a culinary herb. Don’t let it’s size fool you–it is tough and will take a bit of foot traffic. You should be able to find this locally in the groundcover or herb section of the nursery.
